fluxbox 0.9 is bloated :-(

Thursday, July 22nd, 2004

I just upgraded to fluxbox 0.9 (it’s now in debian unstable) and sadly it’s kinda bloated and slow, at least compared with fluxbox 0.1 (the current “stable” version of fluxbox).
I’ll give it some time, but I’ll probably move back to good old fvwm.

I updated my fluxbox keys file so it works with fluxbox 0.9. Try it.

Slashdot has been slashdotted!

Update:
3 hours later, it is still DEAD :-( (Netcraft confirmed).
4 hours later, it’s back (kinda). I’m a slashdot addict, I admit it.

Paperclip

Friday, July 16th, 2004

I want to talk about a small company. Its name is paperclip and it’s a linux based company in Ica, a province in Peru. There are two guys in paperclip: Jaime Wong and Olvier Etchebarne. What amazed me about paperclip is how much they love their company and how somebody can run a linux business in a peruvian province (the capital, Lima, concentrates almost 80% of the economic activity).
One of my goals about my travel to Ica was to know paperclip labs, and I really liked it (Jaime and Oliver can’t understand why).
Oh, and they support the ICA lug: ILUG. Great guys :-)

Not catholic, cthulolic

Thursday, July 8th, 2004

I live in a country (Peru) with a very strong catholic church. Even the constitution recognizes it as one of the main institutions here. In schools, everybody takes “religion”, which is just “catholicism”. Everybody seems to be catholic (or christian) here.
What is funny, is that most of these people don’t even know enough about their own religion or the bible to have a decent conversation (I have read the bible entirely a couple of times, it is one of my favorite science fiction books ever, the book of Job is amazing).

I am a “cthlulolic”. I am a member of the Peruvian Church of Cthulhu. Our beliefs are simple, we will all be killed, eaten and destroyed by Cthulhu. That’s all. It’s just a matter of who will be eaten first.

There is even people that wants Cthulhu to be president of the United States instead of Bush and a lawsuit of the old ones against Microsoft:

With this suit We will show that Windows ‘95, and to a lesser extent
all of the Microsoft range of products, infringe upon the recognised
“look-and-feel” of the Elder Gods, for the following reasons:

o Windows ‘95 is a crawling abomination from the darkest pits of Hell;

o No man can be in it’s presence for too long without being driven into
gibbering insanity;

o A cult who worship it exist in secret amongst the mortal herd;

o Those who associate with it for too long develop common physical
characteristics, to wit: pale, clammy skin, bulging eyes, generally
unkempt physical appearance, tendency towards nocturnal living, change
in diet to that which normal men do not eat (in your case tacos,
burgers and Jolt Coke; in Ours, human flesh, Fungi of Yuggoth and the
blood of Alien Gods);

o Mysterious tomes that purport to explain this phenomenon are reputed
to exist; they are bound in an unnatural substance and only available
at a terrible cost to the user.

o The Microsoft range of products seek to utterly dominate the world,
and force all who dwell there to live in eternal damnation.

Second National Congress of Free Software

Thursday, July 1st, 2004

It was two weeks ago and it has been already covered by APESOL SlayerX and jgwong. It was a nice experience and all. I was kinda sad the day I left Lima because it was father’s day, my _first_ father’s day, at least Rita (my wife) and Alex (my son) were with me at the bus station.

I gave a Python talk and an improvised two hours talk about linux use in business and in the desktop. Here is a pic of my python talk:

I also gave a demonstration of a great patch for redhat, it’s called debian:
